Living in Canterbury as a student

Located in east Kent is the city of Canterbury, 89km east-southeast of London. One hour away from Gatwick Airport by car, Canterbury West is also connected to Ashford International by train, making it easy for residents or students to take the Eurostar from Ashford. The city has over 55,000 residents, with more than half of that being students that go to its three universities: The University of Kent, Canterbury Christ Church University, and the University for the Creative Arts.

Canterbury has its roots in being a UNESCO World Heritage Site Cathedral city, and it relies heavily on tourists, who flock to see landmarks such as the Canterbury Cathedral, St. Augustine’s Abbey, and St. Martin’s Church. Canterbury Cathedral is the Mother Church of the Anglican Communion in England, and is a popular tourist attraction, with services held multiple times a day. Canterbury is also known for its place in music history, having polyphonic music that dates from the 13th century, as well as being the birthplace of the Canterbury Sound in the 1960s. The city has played host to a whole slew of famous bands, from Led Zeppelin to The Who, The Ramones to Blondie, and local bands Soft Machine and Caravan. A annual two week-long music festival, The Canterbury Festival, celebrates a wide range of musical genres. It isn’t surprising, then, to know that Canterbury has a large number of bars and pubs, which tend to the student population and open till at least 2am.

The University of Kent’s main campus is located on St. Stephen’s Hill, 3km north of city centre. Canterbury Christ Church University has its original campus on North Holmes Road, 10 mins walk from city centre. University for the Creative Arts’ Canterbury campus is located 15 mins walk from city centre, at New Dover Road. Popular student accommodation areas for University of Kent students include Hales Place and the St. Dunstan’s area, while Canterbury Christ Church University students are located in Wincheap or Parham.
