Canterbury is also known for its place in music history, having polyphonic music that dates from the 13th century, as well as being the birthplace of the Canterbury Sound in the 1960s. The city has played host to a whole slew of famous bands, from Led Zeppelin to The Who, The Ramones to Blondie, and local bands Soft Machine and Caravan. A annual two week-long music festival, The Canterbury Festival, celebrates a wide range of musical genres.
